Goals of Project:

To prevent diarrheal diseases for improving the living condition and health improvement for disadvantage, neglected & poor people.

Overall Objectives:

To facilitate approximately 10,000 (ten thousand) inhabitants of Adamjee Camp to secure their health from waterborne diseases especially diarrhea, dysentery, jaundice, typhoid, skin disease and other contagious diseases and arrange drainage system, waste management, sewerage system, eco-friendly toilet and safe drinking water.

Specific Objectives:

1. Awareness raising among the local people on drainage system, waste management, eco-friendly WASH and environmental health;

2. Water logging problem solving though improved drainage system in rainy season;

3. Increase the opportunity of sewerage system and waste management in camp area;

4. Ensure safe and eco-friendly fecal waste management & its treatment to reuse the fecal waste;
5. Ensure the safe and usable sustainable water technology in the doorsteps of target people;

Major Activities:

The major activities performed during the mentioned period included Inception works, staff recruitment, conducting baseline survey, conducting foundation training of the newly recruited staffs, conducting awareness activities, conducting training activities, eco-toilet installation, rain water harvesting system installation, deep tube-well installation, hand washing device installation & distribution, waste management and drainage system development.

Major Challenges:

 Huge wastes were dumped at the selected sites of community Eco-toilet. In time and proper cleaning of the dumped wastes were really a challenge which needed longer time to clean;
 Inadequate and insufficient land space for the toilet construction led in repeatedly changing of the design layout which was also time-consuming;
 Inappropriate soil quality incurred huge cost and time for suitable land preparation;
 Congested roads and repairing of existing roads created severe problems in transporting the construction materials to the construction sites;
 Neighboring households created barriers for constructing temporary toilets which caused for time consumption and increased cost for construction
 Temporary toilet was installed for project staffs due to smoothly running project tasks incurring another cost;
 No-cost sharing by the beneficiaries for hardware installation might impede for developing ownership among user groups;
 Lack of suitable experts for setting up the solar panel which also caused for consumption of much time;
 There is still crisis of waste dumping places in the municipal area and the City Corporation still could not indicate a suitable place for this which duly affected in the waste management activities.

Recommendations & Conclusion:

Despite several constraints, SPACE has successfully implemented this project with the active participation of community people of this locality. SPACE has installed gender sensitive and climate resilient community based eco-toilets which are one of the new concepts for the locality and acceptance of this eco-toilet was one of the concerning issues to all. Effective mobilization activities of SPACE staffs, has changed the perception about eco-toilets, enhanced knowledge about hygiene practices, WASH, safe water, hand washing, waste management, use, operation and maintenance of eco-toilets. SPACE has considered social issues, environmental issues and enhanced children potentialities for implementing this project. The community people are using these toilets easily with full satisfaction and community involvement enhances sustainability of the eco-toilets and other project activities. SPACE also thinks marketing of human excreta and how to better use of the urine as fertilizer to agricultural sectors near to the campsites and other agriculture prone of the country.
