Bangladesh is a country of about 156 million of people containing nearly 7.81 million of slum people. Most of the slum people are migrated people from different parts of the country. The literacy rate of slum’s population is 14.6 %( Census of Slum areas and Floating Population, 1997). It has been found that almost 20% of the total populations in slums are school aged children, who do not have opportunities for school-going due to extreme poverty.

To lighten the slum children’s’ life through education SPACE-Sweet Bird Ideal School has implemented a three years’ project titled “Alternative Initiatives to Child Education in Urban Slums’’ with the financial assistance of IDEA, Onlus, Italy at Adabor slum, Dhaka. Sweet Bird Ideal School runs from KG to Class 3 having 100 students out of them boys are 61 and girls are 39. School bears all the educational cost and provides education materials like books, pen, pencil, eraser, note pad and other stuffs at the beginning of the year to students. They also provide school dress to students as most of them come from poor economic background.

During the reporting period, attendance rate of the students was very encouraging. All most all of the students come to school regularly and the average attendance rate was 98%. This year dropout rate was the lowest compared to last four years. Shifting to other area/place was the main reason for this dropout. Besides establishment of new school nearby Sweet Bird School was another reason for this drop out. Students’ performance is increasing day by day. About 99% student passed in the examination this year.

Sweet Bird School offers some type of extracurricular activities to students like painting, music, reciting poem, storytelling and environmental education. Students are very cordially participated in these activities. As a result, students’ sense of engagement or attachment to their school is increased and thereby decreased the likelihood of school failure and dropping out. For encouraging the students, this year SBIS organized annual sports day and art competition.
